WHAT IS LASER

LASER is the abbreviation for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission Radiation. The amplified light of laser is caused by energizing molecules to emit light at a certain wavelength.
There exist many different kinds of lasers, each of which creates a specific tissue reaction depending on the wavelength. The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is one of the most widely used medical laser in the world. CO2 lasers deliver an intense beam of infrared light with 10,600 nanometers wavelength. This specific wavelength has an great effect in soft tissue.

WHY USE LASER

The advantages Of veterinary co2 laser treatment include Less Pain, No bleeding, Less Swelling, Precise, Sterile, Faster Recovery.
  • Less Pain - The laser seals nerve endings as it cuts. So the patient will have less pain.
  • Less Bleeding - The laser seals small blood vessels during surgery and speeds up surgery by minimizing bleeding.
  • Less Swelling - No physical contact except the invisible laser beam. The tissue will not be crushed.
  • Sterilization - The laser sterilizes the surgical site as it cuts. Bacteria and viruses are vaporized by the laser during laser surgery.
  • Faster Recovery - Less bleeding and swelling will result in faster healing.
  • Precision - The beam direction and power can be controlled precisely to remove thin layers of tissue and produce minimal side effects on the surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Reduced hospitalization time - All of above factor will greatly reduce the procedure time.

HOW LASER BEEN USED

Currently co2 laser has been widely used in veterinary surgery procedures. The common clinic applications of CO2 laser include declaws, tumor removal, spays and neuter, and amputations.
  • Declaws - Scalpel blade or a nail trimmer is the traditional way of declaws, that was painful and time consuming. Laser surgery to declaw will make cats have little pain.
  • Ear Hematoma - One of the CO2 laser features, selectively and gently going through layers of tissue, makes the CO2 laser excellent for ear hematoma due to the small opening needed to drain the fluid.
  • Skin Tumor - Laser can completely ablate the small tumors lesion and make pets have less discomfort during the recovering time.
  •  Spay and Neuter - CO2 laser can also be used for all neuters due to the advantages of minimal bleeding and less pain.
  • General Surgery - The laser is particularly good at mass removals. Minimal bleeding during the laser surgery allows the surgery to perform much faster and more comfortable afterwords.
**Our certified laser doctors use the CO2 laser for almost all surgeries done at Moulton Animal Hospital.
We feel this is the best choice for our pets and the patient response is proof that the laser is amazing.
